Marilena Kranioti

Marilena Kranioti (b. 1997 in Greece) is a visual artist who lives and works in Athens. She graduated from the School of Fine Arts of Athens with a focus on sculpture.

Her work consists of small and large scale sculptural installations, with metal, as the main material, and also light, sound, soil and biomass. Her research focuses on the observation and the study of natural phenomena. By means of symbols, she creates works accompanied ritual processes that are dealing with philosophical and metaphysical questions.

Her work has been presented in Museums, Galleries and Festivals in Greece and Italy. Her most important exhibitions were held at the Numismatic Museum, the Italian Embassy in Athens, the Athens Conservatory, the Public Tobacco Factory, the Athens Megaron Concert Hall, the Byzantine and Christian Museum, the Delphi Museum, the Bagion, the Isaiah Mansion and the Blender Gallery. Since 2022, she is running a collaborative studio & art space called CK45 in Neos Kosmos, organizing small scale exhibitions & workshops for the community.

Artist statement

From a young age I shifted my focus on bodily and sensorial experiences but also to the visual stimuli I was getting from my world.

My decision to enter into the visual arts came after the outbreak of an autoimmune disease that manifested itself on the surface of my skin in the form of major melanomas. This experience made me wonder how space is defined throughout one’s own body. I started by defining the body as an autonomous space – my personal space is my body and I sense it as my home. Then I turned to the sculptural object in the surrounding space, observing the relationship of sculptural objects with their environment, and finally, to the space itself as a sculpture. It led me to the poetics of the spatial, in order to express and communicate notions that I could not transfer into the written word.

Growing within an urban landscape, I felt the need to create my own spatial frameworks. I was perceiving the structural elements of my surroundings in a very personal way. I started observing the world and focusing on shapes, on weight of things, on their materiality, and on how these aspects find their way into philosophical theories, universal concepts and into myths. I studied questions raised by metaphysics concerning space and time, cause and effect. I am interested in the sensorial and I am observing all related phenomena in a philosophical but also in a scientific way.

My artistic work expresses my interest for a possible cosmic architecture, for natural and universal structures and for relationships that are forged within them. My own experiences and sensorial stimuli are simultaneously objects of my research and material and tool for my work. My themes are often born from an observation of the firmament, of natural phenomena, of earthy elements of nature, of space, time and of oppositions. Through the study of archetypes and symbols, I am constructing sculptural environments that suggest a different way of interacting with space. These works are mysterious and mystical spaces or objects that become part of a ritual, aiming to interact and mobilize the sensorial experience of my audiences.
